What She Didn’t Do

There’s a lot of talk on Mother’s Day about all the things our mothers did for us. But what you don’t hear a lot about is what our Mother’s didn’t do. Something you may know, some of them you may suspect, and some of them you may not have the slightest idea about. The overarching theme though, is that there was something they didn’t do, and they didn’t do it because of you.

Maybe it was little things. Things like not having that book club night every week with her friends, or not buying the dress she wanted so bad.

Or maybe they were things that seemed important at the time, but we know are BS in the long run. Like not taking a promotion at work, or not buying the sports car, or not buying that second home.

But maybe, just maybe, she gave up on a dream. Maybe she didn’t leave a marriage that did nothing for her. Maybe she didn’t go to Japan to teach English for a year. Maybe she didn’t move to New York to try to make it on Broadway.

So, let’s say you knew about one of them, and you were to ask her if she resented giving it up. She might have regrets…all humans have regrets.

But I’m also sure she would say, as she looked into the face of the child she raised, she would say that she’d happily not do it all over again.

  1. Great reversal of thought. I wonder what my mom gave up. I know some little things, but sad to say, not sure about any big things.

    • I see it now with my wife and the many moms I’ve worked with over the years. I think it’s hard to know what our own moms are giving up because when we’re young we’re more focused on ourselves
