I am thinking about the play “Our Town”, by Thornton Wilder.
I am thinking about the play, because I just listened to an audiobook narrated by Meryl Streep. And just for an aside, how the hell does an author get someone like Meryl Streep to narrate their audiobook? But that’s another discussion, and I will tell you, that in my opinion, there could not have been a better choice. The story is essentially about Emily, and Ms. Streep is essentially poop Emily.
There are some, what I would call, first order connections here for me. Simple things. Like, I was in Our Town in college. Like, I played Emily’s father. Like, in real life I have a daughter named Emily. These are all fun things to think about.
But there is something about this play, that burrows deep. Very deep. A piece of advice. Don’t listen to “Our Town” by Aaron Copland while reading this. (This is your cue to go find Our Town on whatever music platform you use and listen to it while reading this.). I’ll wait.
Okay, are you back? Great, hit play, adjust the volume and read on.
