Girl On A Bike

A blazing hot day on a treeless city street

The sky so bright it hurts your eyes

Heat bakes off the pavement

Broiling the air

Midwestern summer

.

A couple walking their dog

Laconic, saving their energy

.

There is no traffic

You can hear the quiet

.

Then a buzz saw sound

Carbon wheels on pavement

A girl speeds by on a bike

Sandy hair pokes out beneath her helmet

She is wearing wrap around glasses

Her cycling kit advertises a Belgian flooring company

.

The dog, noticing her, finally

Gives a half-hearted bark

Like it’s written into his contract

.

But she is already gone

Zipping by on some errand

The air rending, then closing after her

Oblivious

.

Now it’s quiet again

.
