The Last Drop

“It is not the last drop that empties the water-clock, but all that which previously has flowed out…” – Seneca

.

Neither here

Neither there

Neither anywhere

.

I wonder what they thought

When they found him

.

Not quite ours

Not quite yours

Not quite theirs

.

I wonder what they thought

When they saw him there

.

He should haunt my dreams

He should haunt your dreams

He surely haunts theirs

.

I wonder what they thought

Did they think it was a girl

.

We knew but we didn’t

They didn’t but they knew

She never had a clue

.

I wonder what they thought

Did they cry for his pain

.

He never told you

He never told them

Laughing, but the hurt

The hurt in his eyes

The sentence he told me

.

I wonder what they thought

Would it matter what I knew

.

Before, I was there

With him, with them

Unwitting player in their nightmare

A bit part with a strong line

.

I wonder what they thought

Did they wonder what I knew

.

They knew how it started

They missed the denouement

The end, ineluctable, sealed long ago
